Federal District Allows Same-Sex Marriage & Joint Adoption | Mexico

On 21st December 2009 Mexico's Federal District, by amendments to its Civil Code, opened up civil marriage for same-sex couples and allowed joint adoption.

It seems that Mexico (population of around 110 million) has a Civil Code in each state and in the Federal District (population of nearly 9 million), and a separate Civil Code for matters of federal law. This means that opening up marriage to same-sex couples will be a state-by-state struggle (as in the USA), and that the Federal District marriages of same- ex couples will not necessarily be recognised at the federal level (as in the USA).
